What We Do

FIRE SUPPRESSION

Our members are ready to assist you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the event of a fire, medical emergency or hazardous materials incident.

IAFF LOCAL 296

Each member is a trained First Medical Responder, ready to stabilize accident victims for transfer to the BC Ambulance service. When you call 911 with a medical emergency, firefighters are often able to respond faster that the ambulance service and provide interim care. In addition all our firefighters are hired with a minimum Level 2 NFPA FireFighter certification and then receive advanced training to the standards of the North Vancouver City Fire Department. Becuase the small geographic area occupied by North Vancouver City can be protected from one fire hall, our trucks and equipment are constantly upgraded to ensure a swift and effective response to any emergency event.

FIRE PREVENTION

Public Education

Our members also help prevent fires by inspecting all businesses and shared residential buildings for fire hazards and bylaw compliance. This ensures that the chances of fire are minimized, and that all building safety systems will work as intended.

We also visit all the schools in North Vancouver City to speak to children about fire safety, and to show them what to expect in case of a fire. Each year the National Fire Protection Agency decides on a theme for the year that will be presented by our members during Fire Prevention Week

All of our fire inspectors are at least Level 1 NFPA certified Fire Inspectors, and Local Assistants to the Fire Commissioner (LAFC's).

If there is a fire in the City, our members will investigate the cause of the fire and report our findings to the British Columbia Fire Commissioner so that steps can be taken to prevent similar fires from occurring.

HISTORY

The fire hall has been situated in this location since 1907, with the current building built in 1971 and seismically upgraded in 2002.
